I got this to replace my Panasonic DMR-EZ27K DVD recorder which was always somewhat flakey (timer recording was unreliable and it would sometimes lock up).
I haven't had this unit long enough to know if it'll work more reliably than the Panasonic, but here are my initial impressions after a couple of days:
- It's got a digital tuner (ATSC and QAM), so it can tune in over-the-air HDTV and unscrambled digital cable without a box. This is a big plus if you're like me and don't have a cable box or a satellite box.
- The on-screen menus are easy to use, though plain looking - and you'll probably have to check the instruction manual to understand what some of the commands do (the manual is written in a way that can make simple things seem complicated).
- If you want to re-record onto the same disc, you need to use DVD-RW or DVD+RW discs; DVD-RAM discs aren't supported (if you delete a recording from DVD-RAM, you can immediately re-record into the freed-up space; but with DVD-RW/DVD+RW, deleting a recording doesn't free up any space - to do that you have to reformat the whole disc).
- The remote isn't very good; it feels and looks somewhat cheap, and it's hard to use because the buttons are nearly all the same (tiny) size and shape and color, and have dark gray small text labels on a black background.
- The front panel clock/function display is small, so it can be hard to read from across the room. And although you can dim it a bit, you can't program it to turn off when the unit is off.
That's the list so far...It may seem like I have more complaints about this unit than good things to say about it, but the negatives I listed are mostly fairly minor. As long as this unit can reliably record DVDs, I'll be happy with it!

I have used the DR570 for around a month now, it works as advertised, and is a great value from Amazon. I needed a replacement for my VCR, and the DR570 provides the high-quality recording and playback capability that I was looking for. The user manual was easy to understand, and I had no problems with setup and operation. The digital tuner also works very well, and it picks up all the stations that my HDTV picks up.
It's All Right.
Seems to work pretty good. My wife finds it easy to use. She doesn't care much for the remote control. She programs it to watch her soaps daily on a DVD-RW and that's about it. Haven't really delved into any of its other features.
great product, great price
I looked at a lot of reviews for DVD recorders before deciding on this one. I'm very happy with it. I use it for recording OTA television shows. The recording features and the editing options are very easy to use. The quality of the recordings is excellent. The only feature I wish this unit had is to be able to set it to record every week at a particular time and channel. All of the programs have to be entered individually each week. I have not tried recording from a video camera so I can't speak to how well it works for that. But overall this DVD recorder does what I need and it was very affordable.
Decent DVD-recorder with not so decent ATSC tuner.
I've had this recorder for 8 months and primarily use it for DVD's on a 720P Dlp Rear Projection setup. It does great at that. We got this one because we needed something to record, and the old DLP set doesn't have an ATSC tuner. Problem solved. My only real issues with this recorder are:
1. the tuner quits looking for channels about about 135 on QAM. That's a problem here, as our Comcast cable goes well into the 200's and we have the most basic package available.
2. the aspect ratio of some HD content is not quite right (like our local PBS), and leaves narrow bars on the sides of the screen, or stretches SD content even when set on "auto aspect".
3. the remote is crap. Can't find even the basic buttons in the dark. pretty frustrating.
Other than those things, it does great, and we are pretty happy with it. Just to confirm what others have said about the recording quality, it does a good job on XP os SP, but I wouldn't go lower than that, as motion and compression artifacts get pretty bad at lower settings. Like youTube bad.
Fit my need perfectly
Was replacing an old VCR/DVD combo since the DVD stopped working. This was the best rated for the price and I didn't need a lot a bells and whistles, nor the VCR capablity my old unit had. I did set it up without too much trouble (took me about 1 hour but I'm slow) and the only thing I'd note as not so possitive (but it really doesn't bother me that much), is that on playback some of the colors are a little brighter and off a little. For example the skin tones are a little more orange than normal screen). Overall in the last 2 months I have used this DVD I am very pleased.
